Many think of Italy as being LGBTQ+ friendly.
Here in Puglia we sometimes feel we are “protected” by a permissive bubble, especially come summer time in Salento.
Yet Italy trails behind many other European countries in moving towards the equal treatment of LGBT people.
Criminal law sanctions discrimination on racial or religious grounds but there is no protection against discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender and gender identity.
Hopefully that is about to change as Italy’s legislature debates new legal protections ...
